Training School 1

Training school coordinated by:
Mathias Peirlinck, Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands
Patrick Segers, Ghent University, Belgium

Objectives

This postgraduate training school, organized as part of the Horizon Europe VITAL consortium, aims to equip participants with cutting-edge skills and knowledge in multi-scale and multi-organ modeling for personalized healthcare applications. The training will focus on computational methods that support the development of a virtual human twin for optimizing medical and surgical therapies in circulation overload disorders (CODs).

The lectures will cover core topics in systems modeling, including bond graph modeling, multiscale modeling, and 0D and 1D circulation modeling. Participants will explore advanced high-fidelity 3D organ modeling techniques, along with practical approaches for uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis, and Bayesian inference. Surrogate modeling will also be discussed as a tool for accelerating computational workflows in clinical applications.

Throughout the course, participants will engage with theory, simulation, and real-world case studies, with a focus on integrating data from wearable technology and clinical environments. The training school aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and prepare attendees to leverage computational models for individualized, sex-specific treatment strategies.

Accommodation

You are expected to book your own accommodation as soon as possible, as hotels/b&bs tend to fill up quickly in Delft city center.

Some proposed hotels:

Alternatively, if you cannot find a good option, Delft is relatively easily accessible from The Hague or Rotterdam, so you can also consider booking a hotel/b&b in one of those cities and commuting every day.
